What Are Gonorrhea and Chlamydia?

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and is transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

 Chlamydia
Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Like gonorrhea, it spreads through unprotected sexual contact and can infect similar parts of the body.

️ Symptoms: Silent But Serious
One of the biggest dangers of these STIs is that many people dont experience symptoms especially in the early stages.

 In women:
Abnormal vaginal discharge
Burning sensation when urinating
Pain during sex
Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
Bleeding between periods

 In men:
Discharge from the penis
Burning during urination
Pain or swelling in one or both testicles
Rectal pain or discharge (if infected through anal sex)

How Are They Diagnosed?
Both infections can be diagnosed through:
Urine tests
Swabs (vaginal, penile, throat, or rectal depending on exposure)

At DoctorLamai Clinic, we offer confidential and accurate STI testing, with same-day results available in many cases.

Are They Treatable?
Yes, both gonorrhea and chlamydia are treatable with antibiotics.

Chlamydia: Usually treated with a short course of oral antibiotics.
Gonorrhea: Typically treated with an injection and oral antibiotics (due to rising drug resistance).
Important: You should avoid all sexual contact for 7 days after starting treatment and until your partner(s) are also treated to prevent reinfection.

What Happens If Left Untreated?
If ignored, these infections can lead to serious complications such as:
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women, which can cause infertility
Epididymitis in men, which may affect fertility
 Increased risk of HIV transmission
 Long-term pelvic or abdominal pain

️ Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Use condoms consistently and correctly
Get regular STI screenings, especially if you have multiple partners
Limit the number of sexual partners
Communicate openly with your partner(s) about STI testing
Avoid sharing sex toys or ensure proper disinfection

‍️When Should You Get Tested?
You should consider STI testing if:

Youve had unprotected sex with a new partner
You or your partner have multiple partners
You experience any unusual symptoms
You are under 25 and sexually active (recommended routine screening)
You simply want peace of mind
